As Alex so gracefully pointed out, I haven’t updated for a quite a while. I figured this would be a great time to fill you in!

How is it going?

Not too bad. Thank you for asking. While I have the riding of the bike down pat (thanks, mom and dad for teaching me in my childhood!), I do have some training I need to do. Alex has cardio and strength training going for him — I have asthma and the strength of a web developer (though my mouse hand is strong!)

So, Alex, don’t be so sure you’re going to lose the race. I may win at losing.

So who’s your charity?

While it’s laudable for Alex to let his bike donor pick the charity, I think I’m going to make my pick right now. Alex, what if your guy picks NAMBLA or ACORN or something?

I, of course, don’t mean to imply you’re friends with NAMBLA members.

If I win, I choose Fort Wayne Trails for my charity. Their work goes directly to supporting local governments in building the biking and walking trail infrastructure in this community. With 61 miles worth of trail, we truly have a inter-city regional trail system (from the southwest tip of Allen County all the way to New Haven!).

(Full disclosure: I worked for Fort Wayne Trails for about 5 months last year. While I don’t work there any longer, I am still a committee member.)

What do I need to do to help?

As soon as Alex and I figure out how to fiddle the right knobs and push buttons in the right sequence, we’ll have a little Pay Pal badge up on this site. You’ll just need to click the button to pledge to #TeamAndy, and we’ll be on our way!

Also, I realized I am completely in love with his featured double-burr hand-crank sharpener, the El Casco M 430-CN. Holy crap, you guys, this thing is beautiful. I may never own one — as Rees says:

It depends on the budget you have allotted for your practice. As to your cost, I will say the El Casco… is the fourth-most expensive thing I own — and I own a house and car.

What is especially fascinating is that it produced an almost concave point, curved inward from the collar to the point of the pencil that as Rees points out, displays up to 30% more graphite.

A review of "How to Sharpen Pencils" by David Rees:

This book is delightful in almost every way, with chapter headings like “Anatomy of a #2 Pencil” and “Psychological Risks Associated with Pencil Sharpening: Assessment and Coping Strategies.”. It’s amazingly detailed, too, with entire chapters on each kind of pencil sharpener — burr sharpeners, single blade, electric, et cetera. It goes into the absurd toward the end (See:”Chapter 18: How to Sharpen a Pencil with Your Mind”)

I think my absolute favorite chapter is “Chapter 11: A Few Words About Mechanical Pencils”, which I will display in its entirety:

‘Star Trek 2’ Set Photos Show Benedict Cumberbatch Battling Spock

“Star Trek 2” is shrouded in secrecy. We don’t have an official title, we don’t know the plot, and we don’t know who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing — though all signs point to a villain, especially in light of a new set photo that’s just arrived at our door step.

In this first look at director J.J. Abrams’ currently shooting “Star Trek” sequel, we see quite clearly that Zachary Quinto’s returning Spock and the newcomer played by Cumberbatch are very much not friends. The two are locked in battle on top of what’s being described as “a Space Barge set.”

During the battle and in the photo you can see here, Spock does his best to stop his foe using his famous Vulcan Death Grip, but the move fails; Cumberbatch’s character is able to overpower the grip and regain the upper hand in his struggle against the Star Fleet officer.

Interestingly, Spock is not the only one wearing a Star Fleet uniform. Cumberbatch’s unknown character is seen wearing a black version of the uniform under his silver overcoat. A sign that this man was a friend before he was a foe?

In another shot from the epic battle, Zoe Saldana joins the fight once again as Uhura. She’s using a phaser to save Spock from Cumberbatch’s villain, though whether or not she’ll be successful is a completely different story altogether.
